Tips for Microsoft OneNote

OneNote 2010: Styling with the Styles Gallery

The Ribbon in OneNote 2010 makes the Styles Gallery accessible. It may not look quite as appealing as other Office 2010 applications since the styles appear in a list format; however, the feature makes applying formatting to your content easy to accomplish. Click where you wish to apply the style. On the Home tab, in the Styles group, click on the Style name that you wish to apply to the active text. If you don’t see the style you are looking for you may need to use the arrows to expand the list. Experienced Word users will be happy to know that the keyboard combinations Ctrl+Alt+1, Ctrl+Alt+2 and so on work in OneNote for applying Heading styles too.

OneNote 2010: Dock to Desktop View

OneNote is a great program for note-taking; however if you have to keep switching back and forth between windows, it defeats the purpose. The new Dock to Desktop view button moves the OneNote window open to allow access to other open windows but still makes it available for simultaneous note taking. The keyboard shortcut for this view is Ctrl+Alt+D. To return to the Normal view, on the View tab, in the in the Views group on the ribbon, click Normal.

OneNote 2010: Setting the Default for Paste

When you copy and paste in OneNote 2010, a Paste Options button appears with various options depending on the type of information that was selected. You can choose to paste as the Source Formatting, to merge to the Destination Formatting, Keep Text Only and in some cases to Paste as a Picture. If you want to adjust the default for Paste Options, click the Paste Options button and choose Set as Default Paste.
